One of my all-time favorite days was The Great Blackout of 2011. Yes– a blackout!
On September 8th 2011 at 3:30 in the afternoon there was a widespread power outage in San Diego that lasted 11 hours. Most people had to leave work and go home. No computers, no TV, and no microwaves. We had to limit our cell phone use to preserve the battery.
Do you remember the day and what you did?
In my neighborhood kids of all ages (grown-ups included) played in the streets and gathered on porches. Dinner was a spontaneous potluck made from whatever we could scrounge up in our pantries. Our shared happiness was epic. Honestly, I wish every Sunday could feel like that.
Today has a little of that same magic. It’s Easter Sunday and the final day of Passover—a rare overlap that doesn’t come around often. Together, we’re celebrating freedom, fresh starts, and the beauty of spring. Whether you’re coloring eggs or hiding matzah, there’s a shared sense of joy and something a little bigger than all of us.
Why wait for a holiday or a total blackout to pause and connect?
I’ve been holding on to the quote by Nicola Jane Hobbs:
“Instead of asking, ‘Have I worked hard enough to deserve rest? I’ve started asking. “Have I rested enough to do my most loving, meaningful work?’”
I hope we all make more space for downtime and connecting with others—on a more regular basis.
Have a playful and unplugged day!
